As we wind up the year I like to focus on skills that our third grade teachers have specified as essential when heading into third grade. One of those skills is repeated addition and working with arrays to learn to multiply. If you don'k know what an array is click here. I'm not a very into worksheets because they really aren't very engaging, so I told my kids that if they worked really hard and learned to use arrays I would make a Knockout game for this particular skill. Knockout is a fun engaging game that I use for a lot of skills, and they're obsessed with it! Here is how it works. First they pick teams (yes I let them pick because they are usually really nice about how they choose). They sit in sort of an L shape around each side of our big carpet facing the SMART board with their iPads and a whiteboard app (if you don't have iPads regular whiteboards and markers will work). I project this Google slide show I made called Array Knockout onto the SMART board and they get ready to play.

The first two people in line race to see who can complete the array on their side of the board first. The slides look like this.

They have to write at least one repeated addition equation and at least one multiplication equation for the array on their side. I watch to see who gets the correct answer first then they run up and hit the SMART board hoping to "knockout" their opponent!

Even though the two students at the front of the line are "it" everyone that is still in the game works to solve the problem because if both people who are "it" get it wrong someone can steal and they're both out. Sometimes the next slide looks like this, and if that happens the person who lost has to go to the middle of the carpet, and they're out!

However everyone on the carpet still tries to solve the problem because sometimes the next slide looks like this.

If that happens the first person I see with the right answer gets to rejoin the game!

This slide also pops up sometimes just for fun!

We keep playing until someone wins the whole thing, and they get a big prize, usually a chapter book, so everyone try their best to win. It's also super fast paced and really engaging. Almost all of my kids can do arrays quickly now because of this game! The third grade teachers love that. The game is all yours, just follow the link to the Array Knockout Google slide show above. Have fun knocking out those arrays!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
