I knit a lot in my spare time. I've knitted scarves for almost everyone I know; I've also tried to knit the world's longest scarf. I am not a master knitter by any means, I only know the very basic stitches. I don't have time to learn to knit more complicated pieces like hats or socks. If you are in this boat and are tired of knitting just scarves, then I've got some good news for you! While only needing the basics of knitting (casting on, knit, and cast off) you can knit blankets for kittens!
For those who don't know how to knit yet it's super easy! You can watch this easy video tutorial here.
Once you have the basics down, knitting the blanket is really easy. Generally I use size 8 needles with medium thickness yarn, however, if you're using thicker yarn you should use bigger needles.
Once you start knitting make sure that the blanket is big enough before casting off. Most patterns suggest that the blanket be about 1 foot long and 1 foot wide for cats, 2 feet long and wide for medium sized animals, and if you're feeling like knitting a lot 3 feet long and wide for larger animals. You can always make the blanket bigger if you wish. Remember the cat may have kittens and have to share the blanket you make.
Once you make a few blankets, it's time to find a place to donate them. You can use Google to find local animal shelters and call to ask if they will take them from you. Most shelters are very willing and appreciative of those blankets and will use them as much as they can. The animals will appreciate them too. You can give an animal a comfortable place to sleep at night until they get adopted.
