If you listened to the radio in 2007 you probably could not avoid hearing "Check Yes Juliet," by We The Kings. This catchy song became extremely popular in 2007. Ten years later, We The Kings are on their ten-year anniversary tour selling out almost every venue along the way.
Being a huge fan of the band, I knew I had to go to this tour. I am lucky enough to have gotten a VIP ticket to the New York City show on February 24th from a friend for the holidays. In the few months leading up to the show, I could hardly wait. I had seen the band five times before and already knew they were great performers. However, this concert was going to be different. They were going to be playing their entire first album, which came out in 2007, featuring multiple songs that had never been played live before.
The day of the concert arrived and my friend and I decided to get to the show at 7:15 in the morning. A bit excessive, but totally worth it in the end. Throughout the day we got to see the crew loading in the gear, and talk to the band members as they were in and out of the venue. They were all very impressed with our dedication and expressed their appreciation multiple times.
The time to go into the venue came and since we were VIP we had early entry and received a bag that included a hat, a laminate, and a poster from the tour. Once we were in, we took our places. We were front row center and completely excited.
The opening acts were great. All three bands, Astro Lasso, Plaid Brixx, and Cute Is What We Aim For, had so much energy and really got the crowd ready for We The Kings.
We The Kings opened the show with their hit song "Check Yes Juliet," and continued the set by playing all of their songs from their first album. Their encore included songs from their more recent albums and a cover of "The Middle," by Jimmy Eat World. Their final song was "Check Yes Juliet," again. Though they opened the show with it, they never finish a show without it, so it was only necessary.
The show ended and my friend and I went outside to wait by the bus and see if the band would come out. About an hour later Charles, the bassist, walked out of the venue and started meeting fans. Minutes later the rest of the band followed and we got to talk to all of them and take pictures. The best part was having the band and their tour manager remembered us from previous concerts that we had been to.
No matter how many times I see We The Kings, I'm always impressed by how talented and how kind they are. I can't wait to see what the next 10 years bring them.
