If you haven't heard who Kim Davis is, I'll give you a bit of a summary. She is Kentucky clerk whose job is to issue marriage licenses, among other things. That's her job. So, why do we care? Last year, she refused to issue a few marriage licenses. She was subsequently incarcerated and tried for ignoring a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to the couples. This was right after the U.S. Supreme court declared that the right for gay marriage was guaranteed to these couples in the constitution, throughout the country.
This would be a strange and absurd story, had the couples she denied the rights of marriage to been a heterosexual couple. Alas, the couples she has been denying the rights to marriage have been gay couples. August 20th, 2016, the federal judge dismissed the cases that had been filed by the couples denied the rights to marriage. Her supporters have cried her a champion of the "Religious-Freedom" movement, saying it's a right for Americans to practice their religion and to uphold their Christian values.
This is a problem. Not only because it is a blatant disrespect to the federal law, but also because it wrongly uses religion in the name of oppression. It uses the guise of religion to oppress people who have been marginalized horribly throughout history.
Let me know what you think in the comments below. Should Kim Davis have gotten in more trouble, or was she acting under religious freedom?
