Why My Kids Will Work In Food Service Or Retail

Rude customers, learning to smile through stress even when you want to scream and learning good life lessons all happen in Food Service or Retail.

Food service and retail; those are the two pretty basic first jobs. Most people try to avoid them, which makes sense. They are jobs where you are on your feet for hours at a time and doing things you will never need in some professional jobs. And not to mention that sometimes, in those jobs, the people you are helping can be extremely rude.

But my kids are going to experience everything that comes with working a minimum wage job. Whether it is some restaurant or a store in the mall, my kids will be working there. And no, it won’t be a situation of “I did this so I have to do it too”, it is going to be “You need to learn the lessons that come with working in those types of jobs”.

I want them to learn that in this world, there are people who will treat you like you are less than them because you are doing a job in which they have never done. They will treat you like you are less than them because you are working a job that is a beginning level position. While working in a food service job or a retail job, you get to learn how to deal with people like that, you get to learn that the expression “kill them with kindness,” is a good way to deal with a stressful situation.

You also learn valuable life skills; like how to properly handle money, how to work well with others, and how to deal with stressful situations. All of these skills can and probably will be used later on in life. So having the experience to fall back on will be incredibly helpful.

Your resume will also benefit from working those jobs. Future employers will see this jobs and understand that you have worked long, hard hours and learned many useful skills that can be put to use in a real-world setting.

So yes those jobs are not always ideal but my kids will work them because I want them to learn that people in this world can be rude and inconsiderate, but that you do not have to let them ruin your day. That sometimes you will have to do things in life that make you feel like there is no point to it, but then realize that you are learning skills you can use further on in life. I want my kids to be able to learn that in life being able to keep a good attitude can make anything awesome.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
