Kidisms - 5 Silly Things Kids Have Said
Emily McCarter

Kids say the darnedest things! This is a list of a few examples of the many silly things I have heard children at Summer School say!

* All names have been changed for the safety of the child

1. "This is my worst nightmare!"... "This is my dream!"

- Kindergartner, James*, sat down beside second grader, Sally*, at snack one day. Sally proceeds to look at James and say, "This is my worst nightmare!", throwing her head into her hands. James then pats her on the back and looks up at the ceiling and says, "This is my dream!"

2. "Can you protect my water because it is flavored and important?"

- First grader, Billy*, brought a flavored water from home, and was extremely concerned about someone else drinking it while he played on the playground. He told the teachers that this water was more important than regular water because it had grape flavor.

3. "Oh! That is so much better!"

- When little Michael* fell on the playground and skinned his knee, he thought the world was ending. A teacher took him inside to clean a very small cut and to put a band-aid on it. After the bandage was placed, Michael says "Oh! That is so much better!" ---The power of a little band-aid!

4. "My mom said I'm not supposed to watch a lot of TV, and I think this is way too much.."

- During the day at Summer School, we set the children up to "play" reading games on a Board of Education approved website. After playing this game for roughly five minutes, George*, raised his hand and called a teacher over to say "My mom said I'm not supposed to watch a lot of TV, and I think this is way too much.." The teacher smiled and told him that this was just a fun way of doing school work.

And last, but not least, my personal favorite...

5. "This is what happens if you play with chainsaws!"

- Billy was standing in line waiting to go back to the classroom after snack, when a teacher looked over to see him with his hands and arms tucked inside his shirt. When she asked him what he was doing, he replied, "This is what happens if you play with chainsaws!"

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

cousins

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
