On Tuesday, October 4, Kid Cudi took to Facebook to face his fears and reveal his hardest struggle to his fans around the globe. He explained that he has been living a lie and will be checking himself into rehab for struggling with depression. As stated in his post, he has been dealing with depression and suicidal urges for a while now. The self-proclaimed lonely stoner’s heartfelt Facebook post explains why he has decided to do this now.
“I am not at peace. I haven't been since you've known me. If I didn't come here, I would've done something to myself.”
Cudi’s announcement has sparked conversation across all social media platforms. Some went as far as accusing him of faking. For those who actually follow Cudi and his music, they would have immediately identified a pattern within his earlier tracks. From his mainstream debut in 2004 with “Day ‘N’ Nite” to his later track “Soundtrack To My Life” Cudi has literally been telling us how bad his struggle with depression really is. His genuine sadness and ability to create good music from these feelings allowed him to get where he is today. The Ohio native says that he wants to be better. He wants to change and create a new image for himself and leave his days of depression behind him.
Although Cudi has been hard on himself about withholding his feelings for so long, his post opened a door for black men around the world to speak on this idea of being a man and acting as a man should. The conversation manifested the hashtag #YouGoodMan. This was the result of Facebook and Twitter users starting the conversation on the need for black men to have a space to openly discuss the state of their mental health without shame and public backlash. Several rappers have been openly supporting Cudi and sending him words of encouragement via social media as well. Travis Scott expressed his love for Cudi via Twitter saying, “Praying for my dawg cudi. We love u bro. U mean everything to us. Ur life is to important to us in ways u don't understand. DONT FORGET.” and “YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO US. I MAKE MUSIC CUZ OF U.WE NEED U.”
Cudi informs fans that if everything goes well, he should be back and ready to go by the start of the ComplexCon festival which is set to begin on November 5.
