Kicking off 2017 With Changes

Kicking off 2017 With Changes

This year I decided to not make a resolution, because after my past resolutions, I realized I don't take them serious anymore. However, I have started to make a couple slight changes to my lifestyle in hopes that they will stick.

1. I started to exercise again.

I can't guarantee that I'm exercising just because I'm bored, but I've gone to the gym three time this week and I'm planning to go again after I finish this article. It's not because I want to loose weight or be healthier. (Even thought those are great perks.) I have been going to the gym because it's something I can do to forget about stress and relax. That's one of my main problems during the school year, I'd prefer to sit on social media and see how everyone else is doing, instead of bettering myself.

2. I started eating healthier...kinda.

Yes, I admit to getting Perri's pizza two days ago, but for the most part I have been eating balanced home cooked meals. This still isn't about loosing weight, I feel better when I eat better food. Yes, the "ancient grain" granola I bought from Wegmans may taste like shit, but it give me tons of energy.

3. I have started taking more videos and pictures.

I haven't been taking pictures since my freshman year of college. I had a poster up with memories from my senior year in high school, and I wasn't sure if I was getting more homesick from the poster or not. My original plan was to add on to the poster picture, but I didn't even bring the poster back this year. I didn't print out any pictures to bring back this year either. I feel like that was a mistake. I miss my picture board, so now I know not to make that mistake anymore and that starts by taking more pictures.

4. I started learning Spanish.

I downloaded Duolingo a couple days ago. Like working out, this is just another thing I can do to better myself, instead of scrolling through social media. I can already feel myself losing some of the vocab I was practicing earlier today, but it's fun to do. On top of that, learning is like an exercise for my brain!

5. Instead of scrolling through facebook, I scroll through CNN.

The only worry I have with decreasing my social media is that I will become out of the loop. I decided the fix that by setting up CNN alerts on my phone and scrolling through the news on my app once or twice a day. I realize I'm still on my phone, but just looking at the news weeds out the random videos and cat memes.

I can't guarantee anything I am doing now will stick once the craziness of college starts, but that doesn't matter to me. I'm trying to change and I'm kicking 2017 off with changing myself, showing 2017 I am ready for whatever change it has to throw at me!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
