Most of you have probably heard of the trend "#FreeKesha" going around. If you have not, here's what's going on:
The singer Kesha was sexually harassed by her producer Dr. Luke when she turned 18. She was out clubbing when he drugged her. Kesha brought this up as a report and has gone to court over it so she could be released from her contract with Sony. The court would not release her from the contract but states she will not have to work with Dr. Luke anymore.
An article from Entertainment Weekly states, "The legal battle started in 2014, when Kesha filed a lawsuit against the 42-year-old producer, born Lukasz Gottwald, claiming he sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally assaulted her for a decade. Dr. Luke filed a countersuit — which was dismissed earlier this month — claiming Kesha and her manager planned to extort him. Because of Friday’s ruling, Kesha may have to record more albums with Dr. Luke if she wants to release music. In response, the hashtag #FreeKesha trended on Twitter, with many stars weighing in and some fans calling for a boycott of Sony Music, which distributes Kesha’s music."
Here are my thoughts on this:
Why? Why would you keep her in a company with the man who has traumatized her? She isn't even asking for him to go to jail; all she wants is a release. For someone to be scared in their workplace is one thing, but for a government to say they don't care about her trauma or how she feels is another. Most likely, almost every time she sees Dr. Luke, she is triggered; maybe even when she walks into work she is reminded and triggered.
I hope that justice is given to Kesha, and that she is free of this. She is in my prayers and I hope yours too, because this should not be happening to anyone.
