It seems like this summer has been one high-profile breakup right after another — Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale — and now, a couple no one conceivably thought would ever part: Kermit the Frog and his longtime partner in show business and in love, Miss Piggy. Yes, it is true. On Aug. 4, the split became public and, according to the stars, permanent. This breakup could not come at a worse time as the two will be starring in a primetime “reality” television show, "The Muppets," which is set to air Sept. 22. The two became a couple in 1979 on the set of the original "The Muppet Movie," where they were both actors. They have no children.

Many of these summer breakups have had rumors of infidelity or years of lies, but Miss Piggy and Kermit are a different, perhaps more heartbreaking story. According to both of the performers’ Facebook pages, this was the only comment the two wanted to be made public:
“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Miss Piggy made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television (“The Muppets”/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter. Thank you for your understanding.”
This split did not come from a betrayal, money troubles (their creator was reported to be worth $90 million) or anything so catastrophic. They simply must not love each other anymore, which can be hard to hear about famous couples, especially those who have been seen working together in dozens of projects (perhaps even over 100) and who have been inseparable in both the public and private eye for a generation.
While this breakup may seem sudden and (all things considered) calm and amicable, according to a recent talking head of Kermit in a teaser trailer for his and Miss Piggy’s upcoming TV series, the relationship had been tough for a while. Kermit is quoted as saying, “Piggy made my life a bacon-wrapped hell on Earth.” Not exactly the time to be making snide jokes, Kermit, but Piggy seems to take this comment in stride by responding in the trailer that “dating moi is like flying close to the sun.” While she may be a diva, she is honest with herself and the public.
Making matters worse, it has been reported that not even a week after announcing his split from his longtime wife (the pair has been married several times), Kermit already has a new sow to swoon over. New costar Denise, pictured below, is rumored to be Kermit the Frog’s new girlfriend. Just like a Hollywood big-shot to throw away the woman who has been by his side for years just when a younger, newer model rolls into town. #TeamPiggy. (Miss Piggy could not be reached for comment on this outrageous occurrence.)
...But can she do karate??
Forty years is an extremely long time to be together, and since the pair will be working so closely and do socialize in the same circle, we can only hope that their continued shared artistic work will bring Kermit back to his senses and the two back into each other’s arms, if God only wills.
