Kentucky Girl in a Memphis World

As Elsa Would Say, "Let it go!"

Let me start by saying....it has been EIGHT YEARS people, move on!

I was born and raised a Kentucky fan since my Dad grew up there. So no, I am not a bandwagon fan and yes, I have been to plenty of games and even met two of the head coaches and several players. My whole family bleeds blue but living in Memphis I came under attack when I was in 8th grade. When Calipari took the head coaching job and left Memphis fans were shocked and felt betrayed. I get it, he's been there for nine years and left for a better opportunity and more money. Let's stop and think that if you were a coach would you leave to go work with the most winning college basketball program in the country and get a large salary?? Yes, you would and if you say no, you're lying.

Memphis fans were beyond outraged and it got to the point where we had to take our flag down, the stickers off our car, and would not wear t-shirts because we were scared of how fans would react. I would get nasty comments thrown my way and all because the team I like now had Calipari as the head coach.

As the years went by it died down but I would still get people who said "I hope they lose" or "how could you ever like them?" I totally get sports are competitive and fans get insanely into it. However, to pick on a child for the team she likes because her family lives there is wrong. I know you would not want someone yelling at your child because of a basketball team.

I have always had massive amounts of respect for U of M and their program so let's let this be water under the bridge and move on. Your head coach now is actually one of our old head coaches. We are not even in the same conference so I would truly like the comments to stop. It's hard being a UK girl in this Memphis world so cut us UK fans in Memphis some slack. I promise we are nice people and even cheer on Memphis and hope they succeed. In the end, we all just want the best for each other since we do not play each other. There's nothing wrong with a healthy rivalry, but let's let some of this go.

Sincerely,

A girl who just wants to cheer in peace. Please.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
