In the town of Kent, Ohio, you will meet some of the most obsessive coffee snobs. These are the people who like their coffee grounds to come from a paper bag, not a container. They like their coffee pressed, not brewed, and they only add a touch of coconut or almond milk when necessary. Luckily, if you fit the description above, Kent is your place.

Kent is home to some of the most unique coffee shops Northeast Ohio has to offer. No, I’m not talking about Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. I’m talking about the hidden treasures not many coffee lovers know of. These coffeehouses are not only about tasting the best cup you’ve ever laid your lips on, but also the atmosphere in which you enjoy it. Listed below are three of Kent's finest coffee shops, and after reading about them, you'll be dying to try them all.

Bent Tree Coffee Roasters

Tucked away in the outskirts of downtown Kent, Bent Tree Coffee Roasters is found at 313 North Water Street. Bent Tree was established the summer of 2011 and it has focused on a simple concept ever since. This shop only uses high quality Arabican green coffee beans and carefully roasts them to perfection in shop. Bent Tree only sources its coffee from individuals or companies who are equally as dedicated to taking an active role in all aspects of high quality coffee. They work closely with farmers and coffee cooperatives to improve techniques so that the quality of coffee becomes much richer and better overall.

Scribbles Coffee Co.

A quaint, colorful coffeehouse located at 237 North Water Street, Scribbles Coffee Co. is the place to go to if you are looking for a good read and an even better Cup of Joe. This shop is truly one-of-a-kind in appearance and has a warm, cozy environment. This family-run shop only uses fair trade and organic coffees, teas, and products. They actively support artists, musicians, and community projects, so there is always something new happening at Scribbles.

Tree City Coffee & Pastry

This aesthetically appealing coffee shop has a more modern look compared to the two above. You can find it in the heart of Kent at 135 East Erie Street. Tree City's slogan is "Stay-put atmosphere. Drive-thru convenience," and it is very true to that. Tree City offers a wide selection of both coffee and breakfast food options that you can get to-go or enjoy at their friendly location. This shop prides itself in using direct-trade coffee, which means it works alongside growers to get the coffee straight to you. No third parties involved. Coffee from the grower to your cup.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
