What is Heat Exhaustion?
Heat exhaustion is when the body’s core temperature rises to 104 degrees F. The organs start overheating due to the body’s inability to cool properly. It is caused from lack of proper hydration. Heat exhaustion is especially seen in athletes playing sports during the hot summer months.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion
- Heavy Sweating
- Nausea/ Vomiting
- Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
- Weakness
- Confusion
- Cold, clammy skin
- Fast/weak pulse
What To Do
- Move to cooler location
2. Have the person lie down, loosen clothing, and elevate feet.
3. Apply cold compresses to as much of the body as possible (especially the neck, forehead).
4. Have the person take sips of water or a drink a beverage that is high in electrolytes.
5. If symptoms worsen or do not elevate seek medical attention immediately.
How to Prevent Heat Exhaustion
1. Wear loose fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
2. Avoid sunburn.
3. Seek a cooler place.
4. Let your body acclimate to the heat.
5. Consume 2 cups of fluids, 2 hours before being in the sun.
6. Consume 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes while being in the sun to keep your body well-hydrated.
