They're the members of the band that usually go unnoticed. They're the ones stuck way in the back of the onstage crowd. That's right. I'm talking about the drummers. While they're hidden behind these huge drum kits (and behind every other member of the band), the drummers are the ones who, without them, the music would be incomplete. It's extremely difficult to find a really good drummer, and I'm so glad that these bands have them. So here it is: My eleven favorite drummers in rock music.
11. Jimmy Chamberlin--Smashing Pumpkins
Whenever you think about the Smashing Pumpkins, the first person who usually comes to mind is Billy Corgan. Okay. True, Billy Corgan gave the Smashing Pumpkins their amazing vocal sound; however, Jimmy Chamberlin on drums gave the Smashing Pumpkins their great sound base. His drum parts are technical, and not many people can play his parts. The Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't be the same without him.
10. Vinny Mauro--Motionless In White
Motionless has gone through lineup changes since the band began 10 years ago. When their first drummer, Angelo Parente, left the band, Brandon Richter stepped in for about a year then Vinny joined the band. Vinny's only been a part of Motionless for about 2 years now, so I'm still waiting to see how his sound will develop with the band, but so far, he's doing pretty well.
9. Sandra Alvarenga--Black Veil Brides, Modern Day Escape, Open Your Eyes
Yes, she's a girl. Yes, she's a drummer, and an amazing drummer at that. When I first got into BVB, she was drumming for them. Since her departure from the band in 2010, she's moved on to playing in other bands, such as Modern Day Escape and Open Your Eyes. She's a truly gifted drummer, and I can't wait to see what else she does.
8. Phil Collins--Genesis, Brand X, Brian Eno
Yes. That's right. One of the best vocalists of the 1980s was also one of the best drummers of the 1970s. Phil Collins was one of the most adventurous drummers of the 1970s. It was during a Peter Gabriel solo session (Genesis) in 1979 that Collins established his signature "gated snare" drum sound which quickly became a key part of countless 80s records. The sound can be heard in the track, "In The Air Tonight" which peaks with what might be the most famous drum fill of the decade.
7. Alex Van Halen--Van Halen
Van Halen is one of my favorite rock bands of all time, and their sound completely sticks with you. Alex Van Halen is, in part, to thank for that amazing sound, and he's completely dedicated to the band. I mean, what other drummer would play with his hand broken in 4 places?
6. Rian Dawson--All Time Low
Well, we all know one of the bands that ATL got their sound from: Blink-182. So you can probably guess where Rian got some of his drumming style. (And, yes, All Time Low is more than just Jack and Alex. There's also Rian and Zack.)
5. Travis Barker--Blink-182
Blink-182 is a band I grew up listening to, and I definitely couldn't help loving Travis Barker's style. His drumming style is combined from his hardcore sensibility, skater aesthetic, hip-hop energy and pop appeal. He's such a great drummer, and I don't think that Blink-182 would be as good without him.
4. Tre Cool--Green Day
The energy that Tre Cool plays with is something I wish that I had in my everyday life. I mean, seriously. Give me some of that energy.
3. Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan--Avenged Sevenfold
There is no argument that The Rev was a great drummer. I don't think that Avenged Sevenfold's sound would ever have been put on the map if it wasn't for the combination that was Synyster Gates, The Rev, M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ. While Avenged Sevenfold is still killing the charts, The Rev is definitely missed.
2. Christian "CC" Coma--Black Veil Brides
CC is at number two on my list because of the amazing drummer that he is. In all the years he's been with BVB, he hasn't missed one beat while playing their sets. Plus Black Veil wouldn't be complete without him. (I loved Sandra, but CC completes the band.)
1. Tommy Lee--Motley Crue
Arguably my favorite drummer of all time, Tommy Lee is a force to be reckoned with on that stage with Motley Crue. I mean, what other drummer would have a drum kit that flies out over the crowd while also being able to spin, rotate and flip upside down?
