The day we graduate from high school we are told our whole lives are ahead of us, but it seems that more often than not we are waiting for someday or one day instead of finding what is meant to be TODAY. It’s more difficult than it used to be living in a society that thrives off of being busy. What a weird concept it is that our success is almost measured off of our lack of spare time. Resting is being lazy. Downtime is unproductive. Well I am here to tell you that I strongly disagree and that I think quite the opposite.
“Me time” as I like to call it is the glue in our lives, without it things eventually just fall apart. This is not to say that I don’t believe in hard work because I do. I wholeheartedly know that everyone has a passion and it is our duty to wake up everyday with a drive to let that passion compass our lives, and our work. Living a life driven by something so important to you, it’s easy to say yes when you should say no, or to take on more than is necessary. Eventually, this busy people pleasing self of yours will burn out, your love for whatever it is will diminish and everything will begin to seem like a chore. This is not a life that seems fulfilling, to dread the day that awaits you when morning comes. This is why we all need to stop for a breath of fresh air because it is equally important to take the time to nourish your soul as it is to work vigorously to accomplish your goals. There is nothing shameful or weak about taking the time to recharge and rebalance your life. At the end of the day if you aren’t taking care of yourself you are going to be useless to those around you. So please remember this, it is just as important to fill your own bucket as it is to fill up the buckets of those around you.
We are all kind of like cars when you think about it, but with prettier hair and cuter shoes. Just like cars we need to have our oil changed, our windows cleaned, and our tanks full of gas to make it to our destination as smoothly as possible. So remember that you are your greatest form of transportation in life, and it's important to keep your tank full. Whatever it is that fills your tank you choose, mine is a goodnight sleep, conversations with loved ones and a long hug from mom because let's be honest moms fix everything. What you put into your life you radiate into the lives of others, so don’t be hesitant to put love, light, and kindness into yourself because your journey to your destination will be much more enjoyable because of it. In fact, you may find it’s more about the journey anyway.
