I can probably speak for most of us in saying that keeping a New Year's resolution is hard. You start the year making your long or short list of things you hope to do or achieve in the coming year. You look over your list proud and are excited for when you complete them, but deep down you know you'll probably only accomplish one or two if any of them. This is not a bad thing, it happens to the best of us.
Whenever I make new years resolutions I always think of what I am already doing to better my life and how I can better the things I already do. When you implement things into your life that you are already doing in some fashion, it's easier to keep up and continue to do them.
For example, everyone drinks water. So a resolution could be to drink more water, AKA two giant bottles a day. Since you probably already drink water, you know you enjoy it to some extent, so drinking more won't be as difficult to keep up with–but always remember to make little steps at a time to implement a lifestyle change.
A lot of times new years resolution can be too big. For example, if I have a resolution to travel the world, that is a very large thing to accomplish–especially within one year and as a college student. So making this resolution is a little too far-fetched to be attainable and in the end it won't be accomplished. That's why choosing resolutions that are within reach is better when you want to achieve them.
For example, getting more fit is broad given your current level of fitness and more attainable because it could mean anything. Even going to the gym four times a week. As long as it's more fitness than you were doing before, your goal has been achieved.
Personally, I like to stick to only a few resolutions rather than a long list of things I have always dreamed of achieving. I may have only one to three resolutions per year so I have 365 days to complete all three. That gives me about 121 days to complete each one, whether it's one certain activity or a lifestyle change I make into a habit. This also makes it even more motivational because when you complete a resolution or successfully make a lifestyle change, it gives you even more motivation to finish the rest of your resolutions.
As a whole, resolutions can be a tricky thing, but given the right circumstances and ideas, your resolutions can be achieved. For me, my resolution this year is to make healthy lifestyle changes for the better and post to my YouTube channel more often!
Happy New Year!
