As the semester is beginning to pick up, the work piles on. Tests and quizzes are in full swing, and the number of hours you sleep is slowly, yet surely, decreasing at a steady pace. Syllabus week is over and you can't keep relying on snow days to get you through the week. We aren't even halfway done yet. This is the time to at least act like you have it all figured out. As a college student, the most important part of my day is looking like I have my life together, while, realistically, my ducks are never in a row.

College is all about the art of deception. People at this age tend to seriously judge by first appearances without even saying "hi" first. Social media and the constant use of cell phones does not help. In actuality, this is such a bad way to be, but since it's the reality of the situation, you have to know how to handle it. A campus can be a socially vicious place, but you can make it your stomping grounds with these few tips on how to make it seem like you know what you're doing.

Keep in mind that you are not the only person dealing with hard times.

Everyone has their own battles that they're fighting, so don't feel like the world is only crashing in on you. The best way to go about this is to just keep an open mind and not judge. Everyone has their reasons for what they do, and by being understanding of the hard times they go through makes you a really great friend. Also remember, it is 100 percent OK to not always be OK! If you have an off day, it is totally normal. Don't let it get the best of you. Bounce back and make the next one even better.

Your phone isn't your best friend.

Even in the most awkward situations, you should not rely on your cell to get you out alive. By acting confident, people will come to admire you for it, thus actually making you more confident. Even if you are a pretty shy person, you can pull this off. You don't have to have the most loud and outgoing personality to get people to respect you.

Dressing to impress is more so for yourself than anyone else.

If you dress like you can conquer the day, then you will! Along with dressing nicely goes treating people nicely. When you find yourself in a bind, you will find that people will be there for you if you've been there for them.

Don't worry so much about what other people think.

I know that it's hard to just brush off what you thought was a mean stare or a rumor you heard through five different people that could or could not be true. You just have to remember that your opinion of yourself is what matters the most and if you keep a positive image of yourself in mind, you really do have it together!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
