Who doesn’t remember waking up early every Saturday to catch morning cartoons? I, for one, can’t remember not doing this morning ritual. As a mid-'90s kid, these cartoons I grew up with have shaped my life and taught me how to be myself. (Yes, I'm a '90s kid, even though I was born in 1995). It always a blast of nostalgia when I review the following cartoons. I hope you have seen at least one of these. If you haven't....I have no words.
1. "Batman The Animated Series"
You know it just got real when the theme song of Batman started to play. Your eyes transfixed oin that sexy Batmobile. This '90s cartoon first aired on Sept. 5, 1992 with a bang! Its dark tone, voice acting, and soundtrack was out of this world! "Batman the Animated Series" took over Saturday morning and with that, our love for Batman began. What made this a must watch show was Mark Hamill’s voice acting as the Joker. He indeed was the clown prince of crime. This cartoon paved the way for Blockbuster superhero films we see in the big screen today.
2. "Ed, Edd n Eddy"
Now, this cartoon was a such a joy to watch. "Ed, Edd n Eddy" were a bunch of goofballs who just did the most outrageous things you could think of. From money scams to sucking jawbreakers all day, you knew you were going to have a great time with these guys around. This show resembled "The Three Stooges," and each character brought a little bit of charisma into the show. I seriously recommend this show to all the trouble makers and creative thinkers out there.
3. "Rocket Power"
"Hey, don’t forget the chili fries Squid!!!" Every episode of "Rocket Power"was so action-packed and unforgettable. I got super stoked with the scenery and competitions in this show. It had hilarious characters, and there was always that high energy spirit. As a young kid, I would get ideas from this show and go outside to try them out. We would play hockey variations and have skateboarding speed runs. (We used Powerade caps as hockey pucks.) I guess "Rocket Power" was a stepping stone for my love of skateboarding, and most importantly, having a great time with my squad.
4. "Courage the Cowardly Dog"
When this show was on I was freaked out, but I remember I kept watching. It has such a weird artistic style, and the characters look extremely strange. I have never seen a cartoon quite like it, and that’s why it succeeded. We followed a dog named Courage who lives in the middle of nowhere and must fight evil beings in order to protect his masters. This pup was quite courageous, and even though he may seem scrawny, his wit and luck outsmarted his enemies. I would encourage everyone to go watch an episode at 12 at night alone to feel creepy.
5. "Dexter’s Laboratory"
Dexter was a science wiz! His annoying sister Dee Dee keeps Dexter on his toes at all times, and his evil nemesis, Mandark, was soo shady. (Or as kids say today...salty). His frostiness pushed Dexter to his intelligent boundaries. Although Dexter was short and nerdy, he made up his size with his brains, and he could create a giant robot for battle. This cartoon really teaches young kids to never stop dreaming and never stop creating. It’s an iconic staple in '90s cartoons!
6. "Cat Dog"
Oh yes, "Cat Dog!" We must not forget this wacky Nickelodeon favorite. It was interesting seeing how a Dog and Cat coexisted. Both of their personalities crash at times due to their intelligence. "Cat Dog" was filled with genuine comedy that is funny for adults, too. It was cheesy and idiotic at times, yet the storytelling was extraordinary. It really mirrored how kids behaved with their siblings and how we must learn to live with our differences.
7. "Rugrats"
A baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do! Oh, the memories. One of my favorite shows of all time and a staple for anything '90s, "The Rugrats" was a special cartoon that's filled with so many memorable moments. The show followed Tommy Pickles and his friends on wacky misadventures. We are introduced to many fan favorites such as Reptar and Spike the dog. Still a must watch for all ages!
Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were definitely golden age back then. I feel honored for being part of the '90s and can’t wait to show my future children these awesome cartoons. A trip back down memory lane is always fun, and I hope you enjoyed my choices.
Also, some merit awards go to the following cartoons: "Hey Arnold," "Power Puff Girls," "Kids Next Door," "Doug," and "Rocko's Modern Life."
