New season, new yoga routine! Before snuggling up and hibernating through the colder months of the year, check out how to revamp your yoga routine this winter. Here are a few ways you keep your yoga routine going strong throughout the winter this year.
Ujjayi Pranayama
Have you even fogged up glass or a mirror with your breath? That's one of the better analogies I can make to explain what ujjayi pranayama (breath) is. Also referred to as ocean breath or Darth Vader breath, ujjayi breath is a great way to warm up the body through breathing and also calm your mind and gather your energy. Ujjayi means to conquer. Conquer the cold this winter by learning to deepen your breathing. Check out more at Yogoglo.com.
Sun Salutations
If you have taken a yoga class you have probably done a sun salutation or surya namaskar in sanskrit. They are usually at the beginning of the class to warm your body up. And are a great addition to your practice that you can do at home in your own practice or in a class. Here is a link to a great tutorial on sun salutations and give many modification to meet you were your skill and flexibility are at.
Get Out There!
I love being outside in all weather and seasons but I do tend to become a bit of a hermit during the winter months in fridge Michigan. I 'force' myself to get to more classes in the winter to help me with the decreased mobility the snow brings with it. Just committing to a class helps energize me and keep me in the yoga swing of things. If you don't know when and where local yoga classes are taken place in your town? Check out the MINDBODY app to find classes near you.
Don't let the snow slow you or your yoga practice this year!
