Oh, January. It's about this time of year that I begin to struggle with putting together fashion-forward outfits. There's just something about January that makes getting dressed a little bit harder. The cold really begins to hit and hitting snooze on my alarm clock about 100 times is a whole lot more appealing than getting out of bed and standing around, shivering trying to pick out an outfit. Today, I've compiled five of my best style tips that will hopefully make getting dressed a little bit easier for you this month and keep your style fresh at the same time.
1. Think outside the box when it comes to layering. Layering doesn't just mean throwing on a couple random sweaters over your outfit to keep warm. Yes, play around with layering your sweaters, vests, jackets, etc. but switch it up by pairing different prints and textiles together; for example, faux fur looks great styled with chunky knits. Additionally, don't just think about layering as something that only pertains to clothing. Layering your accessories works to keep your style fresh. For example, layer a bunch of similar style necklaces together for a bold statement look. Or cozy up by layering stylish socks over your tights. The ONE thing I actually like about dressing for such freezing weather is being able to wear an opaque pair of black tights with a more playful pair of knit thigh high socks over them.
2. Skip your statement necklace and grab a bandana to tie around your neck as a quirky scarf. Bandanas worn around your neck as a scarf are trending majorly right now and are a great alternative to that same statement necklace that you wear again and again and again. One of the great things about this trend? You can pick up a bandana for just $1 at your local Walmart (I know, I know, so not "fashionable" but hey, a bandana is a basic.)
3. Or don't abandon your favorite necklace. But don't let your necklace feel blah and overdone by wearing it by itself. Pair it with a long infinity scarf. The scarf will frame the necklace perfectly and also keep you warm- it's like killing two birds with one stone!
4. Don't let black dominate your wardrobe. Such cold weather always has me reaching for every and anything black in my wardrobe. However, I'm trying to steer away from wearing quite as much black. Brighter and lighter colors actually work to boost your mood and will definitely grab everyone's attention amongst a sea of people wearing predominantly black.
5. Look to Instagram for style inspiration. If you're drawing a blank on what to wear, look to Instagram for style inspiration. Follow a few of your fave style icons and browse through their Instas to see if there are any ways that you can steal their looks. They might give you new ideas that you haven't thought of how you can style pieces you own that are similar to theirs. Not following anyone super stylish on Instagram? I love to browse through brand hashtags such as #uoonyou (the Urban Outfitters hashtag) to see how others are wearing my favorite brands.
Here's to a well-dressed (but still warm) January!
