Why We Should Keep Politics Off Facebook

Facebook is a war zone right now and it's going to be for the next few weeks, but please, lets make it a little bit better.

Facebook is a war zone right now and I’m pretty sure it’s going to remain that way until Election Day. Despite what anyone says, the drama is coming from supporters of both candidates. No matter how hard you try, you are not going to convince anyone to support your candidate during a Facebook debate; you’re just not. If anything, you are going to lose a friend or anger a relative.

Facebook is the world’s worst medium to have a debate on. You can’t tell tone, you’re going to have random people jump in and cause side debates and no one is going to come away with a better understanding of your side of the argument or the ideals that you’re currently arguing over. No one is going to change their opinion on gay marriage or transgender rights because those are ideals that are engrained in people. I don’t know of anyone that has changed their mind about a social issue ever, let alone from a debate on Facebook.

It could be something as simple as posting a status like #ImWithHer or #MakeAmericaGreatAgain in it or it can be something like sharing a video from a political commentator like Keith Olbermann or Tomi Lahren. This country is almost a 50/50 split in terms of liberal or conservative, so if that statistic lines up with your Facebook friends, every time you share a political article or policy inspired tweet, you’re probably disagreeing with 50% of your “friends.”

Another huge problem with arguing on Facebook is that no one can tell what the tone of voice is, so every time you make a joke or say something that was supposed to have sarcasm in it, not everyone is going to pick up on it. Sure you can clarify it later on, but think about the people who are just reading the status update and don’t get to see that you explained yourself.

Plus, I know you’ve been told this by almost every professor or someone trying to give you career advice, but the internet really is forever. Everything you post or comment is now viewable by everyone who you are friends with, and depending on your privacy settings, everyone who is friends with people who commented on the post. Plus think about it: how many times have you sent a screen shot of something you saw online and sent it to someone to make fun of them? Exactly. I’m sure that you don’t want that to happen to you.

I know that politics are the biggest news story in the world right now but please, do not argue about politics on Facebook. There are no winners in a Facebook argument, only losers. If you really want to talk about politics, do it in person or do it over text; just don’t do it online.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
