Keep On Loving

A message to those struggling with recent executive decisions.

We have seen the nastiest, ugliest, most demeaning start to a new year that we have ever seen.

There seems to be almost a complete lack of peace among the citizens of this nation. Some are terrified, others are saddened, and others are just angry about the things that have been said and done in the last few weeks.

This is no longer about liberal and conservative.

This is no longer about democrat and republican.

This is not even about politics at this point. It's much too far gone to consider politics.

This absolute disgusting example of a distorted and pen powered executive branch has sparked arguably the worst political and societal unrest in recent history. We have seen nothing but fear and anger from those whom have been effected by the stroke of the president's pen and what in turn looks like a government that cares not about those people, but only about their appearance and crowd sizes.

Alternative facts have become the norm, television ratings are being prayed for at national prayer breakfasts, and the freedom of the press is beginning to become compromised because of their inability to publish anything that's not "fake news".

The worst and absolute saddest of all is the incredible uprising of racially and ethnically sparked hate speech and the rise of stereotypes and threats to those who don't look "American enough". In an effort to keep Americans "safe", people have been labeled, borders have been shut, and visas have been revoked. This is turmoil, and this is not normal.

Now more than ever, we must love our neighbor like our own. We can no longer accept hate and racism and we must no longer allow those that hold office to promote hate, fear, and racism. We must constantly push back on those that hold office, we much remain involved and well informed, we must not let those in office do whatever they wish. The last time I checked this is a government run by the people and for the people. Not a government run by the rich and for those whom are stereotypically "American."

Overcoming something like this takes an overwhelming amount of love and tolerance from every last one of us. This is not about democrat and republican, this is about kindness, tolerance, and having a heart.

Keep fighting, keep loving, and stand firm in what you believe in even if you are going against the norm.

These United States of America are for Muslims, Mexicans, Middle Easterners, and refugees just as much as they are for the rich white men on Washington.

Keep on fighting, and keep on loving.

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows
Photo by Poodar Chu on Unsplash

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
