Black Friday: The fourth Friday of November (after Thanksgiving); where stores around the country have huge deals on items within their stores. It's been a happening since 1932, and last year alone, 151 million people participated. It's a nationwide event, and according to my phone, a U.S. holiday. But within recent years, it's no longer a Friday event. In 2015, nearly a dozen stores opened at 6pm or even earlier on Thursday - Thanksgiving Day.
That caused an uproar of the sanctity of the holiday, and a discussion on companies and their want for profit. Thousands of people boycotted companies that chose to have their sales on Thursday, which in turn caused most companies to postpone the start of their sales until Friday morning of this year.
This is something that millions of Americans are standing behind.
Thanksgiving is a holiday meant for family. It's meant to be spent playing games, cooking large meals and laughing with the family. It's a time where family comes together, where family from across the nation all meet in one singular spot and simply enjoy the company of one another. Family who hasn't seen each other in years can be together and enjoy the time they have, while at the same time getting into the spirit of the upcoming Christmas season. Thanksgiving is a day to spend time with the very people that you are thankful for, the people that make you thankful for every day of your life. It's a special day that we get once a year. It's not meant to be spent standing in lines to buy the newest gadgets and knick-knacks.
This year, companies got the message. Very few are actually opening on Thursday this year, and people could not be more grateful.
Spend time with your family this Thanksgiving; save the shopping for Friday.
