Many students look forward to college as a time to change, grow and become a more independent person. In the process of all of this, it is easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing. While it is important to grow and figure out who you are, it is even more important to remember who you are and what is important to you in the process.
As kids, we were always told not to do something because of peer pressure. "But everyone else is doing it" was never close to an appropriate reason for doing something. So, why is it when we get to college, we try to become someone else in order to fit in? Becoming someone that you are not to fit into a certain club or group of people is not going to help you in the long run.
When you start doing things you don't enjoy to fit in with a particular crowd, there's a certain point you reach. You can only change so much until you don't recognize yourself anymore. There is no one that is exactly like you are. Being you is so much better than trying to fit into someone else's idea of who you should be. If the world was full of people that all liked the same things, wore the same things and acted the same, it would get very tiring very quickly.
So, in the end, listen to the music you enjoy. Do the activities that you like to do. Dress the way that you want to dress. Don't let trying to fit into a box that other people want you to fit into stop you from being the person that you are. There will be people that will appreciate you for being you. Don't make friends over a fake idea of yourself.
