As the most exciting art week in Hong Kong comes to an end, it is time to reflect. Interest in art in Asian is definitely growing at a phenomenal speed, with Art Basel in Hong Kong attracting a record breaking figure of visitors from all over the world. In order to keep capacity in tact, VIP members, who were previously able to bring multiple guests in and out throughout the day, were restricted to only one guest. Art Basel tickets were resold for high prices, something that we tend to see only for big time performers at concerts. Thus, this evidently shows that people around the world are becoming more exposed to and involved with the art world.
One of the artists that is arguably the winner of this month is KAWS. Many who visited Hong Kong this past month most likely saw the enormous 121- foot sculpture of a cartoon-like character created by Brian Donnelly (professionally known as Kaws) leisurely laying on the waters of Victoria Harbour. Previously, similar installations have been to Seoul and Taiwan as a part of the Holiday theme. Unfortunately, the sculpture was torn down early due to heavy wind and unfit weather conditions.
However, Art Basel in Switzerland is something the art world is looking forward to, and it will open to the public on June 12 of this year.
