Among the fundamental lessons that almost all young American children are taught are the ideals that "one is responsible for his or her own decisions," or, "you should treat others the way you would want to be treated," and that "fighting fire with fire does not solve anything."
These are some of the very first things every person learns whether they come about it explicitly or not. It's not only considered socially decent to honor these ideals, but it is also expected. By the time a person is fifty-something, there is virtually no excuse at all for them to act ignorant to these societal expectations.
That being said, Kathy Griffin's most recent press conference regarding her controversial picture of Donald Trump absolutely blows my mind. How a grown woman can be surprised to face significant backlash after posting a picture of the President of the United States beheaded and covered in blood is beyond me.
In the press conference, Griffin played the role of a victim - someone who is being personally attacked by President Trump for just doing her job.
Well, Kathy, I can almost assure you that if you posted a picture of any person on this planet, beheaded and bloody in your hand, that person would be upset. I would be willing to bet a lot of money that that person would express their concern on an equally public platform as the one you used to share the picture. I'm sure that this person's spouse would be upset, I'm sure that this person's children would be disturbed, and I'm sure that anyone who saw that picture would be unnerved. I'm even sure Kathy that you yourself would be upset to be the victim of an image like this. So why are you expecting Donald Trump to respond any differently?
Now, like so many others do with issues in society today, Griffin tried to turn this into something that "old white men" have done. While it could be argued that select men are responsible for certain issues in society, the downfall of Griffin's career absolutely is not one of those things. When someone, as an adult, makes a decision to publish heinous material on the internet, that person is fully responsible for all consequences.
Kathy tried to back up her decision by claiming that her humor is just bold and "in your face."
Well, what a comedian should know better than anyone, is that there are lines. There are boundaries of common decency that should never be crossed and just because something is done in the name of comedy, doesn't mean it's funny. When a boy does something and someone uses the ridiculous excuse "well, boys will be boys!" society laughs at how invalid such an excuse is. Why would "well, comedians will be bold" be any different? Bottom line is that we're all people. I have a pretty twisted sense of humor myself, but the gruesome death of another person simply because of differing views is not a laughing matter.
My personal favorite part of the press conference was when Griffin claimed that her so-called personal attack by the President was the first time that a standing president sought to ruin a person's career. Really, Kathy? It might be the first time that this has happened to you, but it absolutely is not the first time this has happened ever. Does she have any idea how soldiers, press and White House staffers, and other government employees in the centuries of this country's history have been viewed less than favorable in the eyes of the President and have suffered professionally because of it?
That doesn't necessarily make it right, but Kathy, get over yourself.
And for all of the people bringing up the horrible, absolutely offensive pictures that circulated when Obama was in office, the only thing that that proves is that there have always been people who are insane and express discontent in extremely heinous ways. Kathy Griffin has simply reserved a spot for herself on that list. The difference is, those people who took those anti-Obama pictures didn't use their fame to publicly act like a victim for their actions.
Kathy Griffin's demise is completely her own fault. The fact that she is trying to rally a group of people who have legitimate concerns with the leader of this country to support her is absolutely pathetic. There are serious problems, there are real victims, and then there is Kathy Griffin and her own stupid decision.
