Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee just made her Broadway debut in "Waitress", the musical, on April 10th, replacing Stephanie Torns in the role of Jenna.
McPhee also starred in the entertaining yet brief T.V. show "Smash", created by the legendary Theresa Rebeck from 2012 to 2013. "Smash", was incidentally about Broadway and the creation of a new Broadway musical hit, so it seems she has come full circle.
"Waitress", based on the film of the same name, is about a young woman named Jenna in an abusive marriage, who accidentally becomes pregnant. Unhappy with her situation, she begins having an affair with her gynecologist after having had a few appointments with him.
As an amateur pie baker, already working as a waitress at a small town diner in the South, Jenna enters a local pie baking contest, hoping to use the money to separate from her husband and live on her own with the baby.
With a heartfelt score written by Sara Bareilles and a truly talented cast, "Waitress" has truly become a must-see musical. While I will always be partial to Jessie Mueller, the original Jenna, Katharine McPhee has always had a beautiful and powerful voice and will surely make a great addition to the rest of the cast until her contract ends on June 17th.
