Kasich Is Hardly A New Hope For Republican Voters

Why John Kasich will not save the Republican party.

Lately, the establishment of the Republican party has tried to bill former Ohio governor John Kasich as the sane alternative to the asinine Donald Trump and the creepy Ted Cruz. Pundits have said that the latter two candidates are destroying all credibility that the party holds and, as such, the establishment is backing Kasich. However, while Kasich may appear to be a decent guy, he will not save the party. Here's why.

1. His chances of winning the nomination

First and foremost, Kasich is trailing Trump and Cruz in the polls. With only 144 delegates, he would need 104 percent of the remaining delegates in order to secure the nomination. Yes, you read that right: 104 percent. Unless there is a contested convention, he has absolutely no chance of becoming the Republican candidate. Most likely, the party's candidate will be Trump or Cruz, leaving the "savior" in the gate.

2. His views on abortion

Like most people—Republican or otherwise—Kasich denounced Trump when the latter stated that women who have abortions should be punished. In response, Kasich said: "Of course, women shouldn't be punished." Still, he opposes all abortions except in "specific cases such as rape." However, as governor of Ohio, he defunded Planned Parenthood, causing many facilities to close down, and thus restrict women's access to abortions and other medical services.

Though women will not face criminal prosecution for abortion, because of their limited access to clinics they will, most likely, be forced to carry their rapists' babies to term. How is that not punishing women? Furthermore, Planned Parenthood does more than abortions. They perform mammograms, various cancer screenings and they educate women about their reproductive health.

3. His views on -- well, everything

Here's a taste: He voted YES to banning gay adoptions, and ending preferential treatment by race in college admissions. He says Bible stories are fact, and believes that separating church and state is a "goofy misinterpretation." He also believes Ohio "won" with fracking, and that climate change is unproven. He supports Saudi Arabia, and the banning of Syrian refugees. He even voted YES on decreasing the waiting period for guns from three days to one, and opposes all restrictions on the right to bear arms.

The list goes on and on. But it all goes to show that Kasich, while appearing to be a sane person, is simply Trump and Cruz, except with a less abrasive facade. If you have any sense you'll vote Democratic in November, because the GOP is only trying to hold us back.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
