Karen Henson Jones: The Woman Behind "Heart Of Miracles"
Karen Henson Jones

Life. Near-death experience. Religion. Spirituality. Miracles. These are just a couple of words to describe Karen Henson Jones’s novel, “Heart of Miracles”. It is much more than just an, “Ordinary Religion and Spirituality Book.” In fact, if I could use one word to describe it, that word would be uplifting. The author, Karen Henson Jones, lets you experience her spiritual, inspirational journey. She has been through so much with her health problems. Despite that, she overcame her adversities with meditation, yoga, friends, family, and most importantly, God.

According to Karen Henson Jones’s website, “Karen Henson Jones was on the conventional path to success in the corporate world when a sudden cardiac event at the age of 30 took her to the brink of death. During an otherworldly experience, she was presented with a choice to leave her body or to return to Earth. When her request to live was granted, Karen was forced to come to terms with the life she had been living."

"With warmth, wonder, and wit, Heart of Miracles takes us with her on an inspirational journey through India, Italy, Bhutan, and the Holy Land of Israel in search of a more meaningful life. Exploring the power of meditation, Western medical science, the transformative doctrines of reincarnation, and the teachings of Jesus, Karen encourages us to embrace the full possibilities of our spiritual selves. Karen is a graduate of Cornell and London Business School."

I am fortunate enough to have crossed paths with Miss Karen Jones. Her famous sportswriter uncle, Mr. Quinito Henson, and I knew each other. In 2015, he asked me to write about my Uncle Samboy Lim, “The Michael Jordan of the Philippines.” Tito Quinito, as I call him, posted about Miss Karen’s book. He introduced her to me, and we have known each other ever since. In fact, I am currently interning for her and am enjoying every second of it.

I wanted to help “Heart of Miracles” pick up more steam, so I decided to interview Miss Karen on her book, life, and more. Hope you enjoy!

1. “What inspired you to write Heart of Miracles?”

Karen: “I wrote Heart of Miracles because I wanted to see they type of book that I would have liked to have read. I felt like at 30 years old, I was learning SO many new things that could have helped me when I was younger, I wanted to share. I also wanted it to be a lighthouse in the dark for people. For them to be reminded that God can carry us."

2. “How is your life different from what it was in the past?”

Karen: “Wow! My life is so, so different. Before, I believed that my options were very limited. That is in all categories. Now I now I can expand my imagination and co-create with God. That’s a huge paradigm shift.”

3. “How did you get to be such a strong, independent woman?”

Karen: “Consistent meditation and making good choices. To be strong in your life, you need to have a strong body and mental strength, so for me, yoga covers both of that. Also, instead of comparing yourself to other people, simply ask: What’s in my heart? What are my true practical needs? What does God wish for me? What does this planet need right now?”

4. “What does it mean to have a Heart of Miracles? How can you have one?"

Karen: “To have a heart of miracles means to have compassion: both for yourself and others. It also means to become someone who reads the signs, omens and dreams and can begin to recognize the miracles in every day life. To cultivate a heart of miracles, start with loving yourself and just asking the Universe: Guide me.”

5. “Are you writing another book? If so, how will it be different from Heart of Miracles?"

Karen: “I am working on something right now, but it’s not confirmed yet. It will have to do with miracles. Stay tuned!”

6. “What advice can you give to teenagers like me about life?"

Karen: “First and foremost, remember that life is meant to be a joy. Be grateful for every little thing, and let go of what is not meant for you. Be open to new places and people. Learn about nutrition and meditation. Anything that is causing you worry can be remedied by prayer. Also, learn the power of words, which are magic spells over your life.”

7. “What advice can you give to aspiring writers like me at Odyssey?”

Karen: “Wow, the master of giving advice for writers is Paulo Coehlo. I would Google ‘Krista Tippett Paulo Coehlo’ and listen to that Soundcloud Clip. He covers all of the bases. I would say, being a writer isn’t just being on a paper or writing a book, but it can also be how you express yourself on social media. And read great books!”

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
