After the 2013 release of the critically and commercially praised Yeezus, Kanye West did something that fan's hadn't seen in years: he stopped releasing music. 2014 marked the first time in 4 years that West hadn't released an album. In the years following the release of his sixth album, the award-winning producer and emcee took his talents to the world of fashion with the release of his Yeezy Season fashion line, along with the Yeezy BOOST shoe line, in collaboration with Adidas.
The rumors that inevitably come together whenever a popular artist goes without releasing material began to make the rounds, as expected. At first it was that West's next album was going to be a sequel to Yeezus, simply titled Yeezus 2. Next, several people within the hip-hop industry began to say that West had played the album for them. Theophilus London, a rapper who would end up collaborating with Kanye on his sophomore album, announced that West had played his upcoming album for him and a group of 20-odd other people in a pitch-black room. For the next few months, there was next to nothing for fans of the rapper to go on. Then came New Year's Eve 2014 - and with it one of West's most personal tracks to date.
Only One, released at midnight on December 31st, 2014, is an extremely heartfelt track that Kanye dedicated to his daughter North. The release of this song kicked off a whirlwind of tracks from Ye's camp, the most popular being FourFiveSeconds, an extremely catchy pop song featuring Rihanna and Paul McCartney. Wolves and All Day followed. A couple months later fans got what they had been waiting on for nearly a year and a half: an album title and what looked to be the album cover. West tweeted the words "SO HELP ME GOD", along with an image that goes back to the 1400's, when it was used by Monks as a symbol for the Virgin Mary.
As exciting as that announcement initially was, West ended up changing the album title to Swish, and cautioning fans that that was the title "[for] now". Over the next few months, fans saw the release of a couple of remixes from 808's and Heartbreak, a more introspective album by Kanye filled with heartbroken, auto-tuned crooning. After a couple of quiet months from Kanye's camp, Kim Kardashian, West's wife and mother to their two children, announced that West would be bringing back "G.O.O.D. Fridays". G.O.O.D. Fridays were something that was conceived during the production of Ye's sixth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. With it, he would release a new track featuring artists from his G.O.O.D. Music record label every Friday, so the music world was understandably eager knowing that they would soon be receiving music from one of the internet's favorite rappers. West came through with the goods later that night by way of a SoundCloud update, which included two entirely new tracks: Real Friends and a snippet of a track titled No More Parties in L.A., with the latter featuring another one of rap's most promising emcees, Kendrick Lamar. A full cut of Parties was released a week later. This weekend, however, there was no SoundCloud update of Kanye West's page. Twitter and the rest of the internet have been anticipating a possible Kanye and Drizzy collab, using the fact that both rappers posted the same picture - an album cover of a man named Larry Graham, who just happens to be Drake's uncle. Until we hear this track, there's really no other morsels of news for Yeezy fans to devour that will tide them over till the release of the album - except for the fact that it's only about two weeks away. Expect to see "Swish" on shelves February 11th.
