In anticipation of what should've been one of the best days of my life I found myself being less than impressed in the performance that Kanye gave at his Atlanta concert on his latest leg of the Saint Pablo Tour. While fans were boasting their allegiance to Yeezy in the moments leading up to the big moment I cannot say that it was worth waiting what became about an hour before the hip hop mogul made his debut at Phillips Arena.
Instead of following the traditional motion of having someone open for him Kanye served as the headlining act for the entirety of the concert. I've been following everything Kanye for years now as I consider myself to be a big fan of both his performances and moves both on and off the stage but I cannot say that I found myself to be impressed at all with his antics, I just thought it would be something more than what it was. Aside from the fact that I had less than desirable seats I don not feel that my concert experience suffered at all as those in the pit received the most action.
As he performed hits from Graduation, College Dropout, 808's and Heartbreaks, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and his latest album The Life of Pablo he moved about the arena on a small square platform for the duration of his two hour set. He even made sure to include a short inspirational rant on his critics and what it means to really believe in your abilities even when no one else does.
In terms of my dissatisfaction with the performance I just felt that I was expecting it to be more of a performance with perhaps ballet dancers or something similar to the images that I've seen in his Yeezy Season shows or the intense visual stimulation that viewers like me have gotten from the imagery that he's displayed in his props and on stage extras. This time around things were just a little bit basic in my opinion. Ye's physical form was distorted on the screen available for viewers higher up to see whereas in the literal sense he was dancing in his usual distinct way. Kanye's dancing reminds me of Mary J. Blige in the sense that their dancing styles are very difficult to confuse with other artists because of the special appeal that it seems to have.
All in all the concert I still have so much love for Kanye but if his future concerts continue to lag in their presentation I'm not sure that I can say I would return to watch another performance.
