We have all heard about the recent trending topic of athletes joining Colin Kaepernick's protest of not standing during the national anthem. At first, the protest caught everyone by surprise. But now, everyone is outraged. Outraged, that an athlete will not stand during the national anthem. Outraged, because Kaepernick is an American, and as an American he should be respecting our flag.

Now, here is why I shall kneel with Kaepernick. Kaepernick, is expressing his first amendment right, and whether we agree with him or not he has the right to protest. Sure, there are different ways to raise awareness for his cause, but what better way to catch people's attention than to protest the national anthem.

In a recent segment of Tomi Lahren's Final Thoughts, she expressed how it was un-American and disrespectful. However, I begged a differ Miss Lahren. It is by all means very American. Kaepernick has in fact inspired athletes of all genders and race. Like, Megan Rapinoe a female lesbian soccer player, who by the way was bashed by Lahren on how if she were in another country she would have been stoned or thrown off a building because she is a gay athlete, and how she is disrespecting our country's flag as well.

For those who do not understand the reasoning behind sitting down or kneeling during the anthem it is to spread awareness about Black Americans and minority oppressions.

Now we can argue back and forth as to why he has decided to take a stand for the black community, but frankly, it does not matter because he is doing it now and inspiring millions to get involved and take a stand. Or, we can hear critiques like Lahren constantly claiming how un-American he is and how he is a "whining" about a non-existent oppression. Or whether he is now going to reject the "American dollars" that he is receiving since they are "full of American propaganda that is found oppressive."

Many are offended but if standing during the anthem is such a controversy, why don't the people who are offended actually stand during the anthem while they are at home? Is it because no one is watching? Does Kaepernick receive more criticism because he is a NFL player and since he is supported by "American dollars" he should be more respectful?

The list goes on, however, it is clear that his purpose is not to offend but rather raise awareness. Not because he detests America, it is because of his love for America and the people in it that he doing this protest. He desires equality for minorities, and if that is offensive then Americans need a reality check.

If Americans are worried that he is offending Veterans, there is a hashtag going around stating "#VeteransForKaepernick," and by the way this hashtag is trending. So now who Kaepernick offending? Let us stop feeling targeted and begin to start a conversation, because that is his goal, and frankly, it should be everyone else's goal as well.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
