My name is Anna. I have high-functioning and epilepsy. I am an alumni of the University of Missouri- Kansas City. I graduated with honors for my hardwork. As a (former) college student with autism, college hasn't always been easy for me.
Here are some things I wish I would've known in college.
1. It is okay to change your major.
I changed my major multiple times during my college years. It took me a while to find something that interests me. When I changed my major, I found out that I wasn't going to follow the traditional 4 years of college. I was upset at first, but it took me a while to accept the fact that it wasn't going to happen. It's okay to not graduate within the 4 years of college because most people don't.
2. Get involved outside of class.
I am really shy when you first meet me. It is hard for me to make new friends, but that's what joining a club is for. If I would've joined, it would help me get out of my comfort zone.
3. It is okay to not find a job for you after college.
Most people that I know have jobs lined up for them after college. I felt discouraged when I found out that my college friend already found a job. It was hard for me not to feel discouraged. I knew that I would have to work on resume. It was a struggle for me to perfect my resume. It was hard for me to land a job interview. That's what career advisors are for- so use that wisely.
