Last week, Time Magazine published an article which contained images of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wearing blackface. The photos were taken back in 2001 when Trudeau was attending an Arabian Nights themed party. More pictures of Trudeau in blackface have resurfaced since the release of the article.
As a person of color who has always seen Trudeau in a positive light, the first wave of emotion after seeing the pictures was disappointment. I always viewed Trudeau to be a very conscious, informed, and culturally aware politician.
Now, I'm starting to wonder if he's just another two-faced politician.
Even though the pictures were taken almost 20 years ago, and Trudeau has probably changed since the photographs were taken, the fact that they exist is disturbing. Trudeau was not a young boy when the picture was taken. He was 29 years old. Trudeau claims that he was blinded by his privilege at the time and couldn't see what was wrong with his "makeup." He says that he now understands how insensitive and wrong it was to wear blackface.
Even though the pictures were taken almost 20 years ago, it is still of utmost importance to talk about the pictures. Blackface isn't just "makeup," as Trudeau refers to it multiple times in his apology. Blackface's primary use is to exaggerate the features of people of color, specifically African Americans, and to humiliate them by making a caricature of them. Blackface was used to promote stereotypes and racist view. To refer to blackface as "makeup" rather than what it truly is is in itself insulting.
Although almost 20 years have passed since the pictures were taken, as a person of color, it is difficult to forget and move past this news. Since the release of the photographs, Trudeau has apologized. It is also important to remember that in the past 20 years, Trudeau could have grown and recognized that his past actions were wrong.
Nobody can change the past, we can only hope that he has changed and recognized his mistakes. But for me, the doubt that Justin Trudeau is truly the person that he presents to the world will always linger in the back of my mind.
