As an English major, I've received plenty of judgment and skepticism regarding my choice of major.
"What are you going to do with that?"
"All you must do is read and write."
"English is such an easy major, anybody can do that."
"You're majoring in English, you won't make any money."
Contrary to popular belief, English majors do so much more than what you may think and majoring in English opens up a huge door of opportunity for career paths. Most people assume English majors read and write and that's it. Frankly, that isn't the case.
Obviously, reading and writing is a major part of the English curriculum, but that isn't all there is to it. We read, we write, we engage, we analyze, we argue and we grow.
People tend to underestimate the power of the English language, and they often take it for granted. Through our major, we have developed a better understanding of the language and are better able to think analytically and communicate with others.
With an English degree, you can become a teacher, journalist, lawyer and so much more. English degrees open a wide door of opportunity for career paths.
So next time you talk to an English major, don't question their choice of major. Support them! These people could be your children's teacher or even your lawyer one day.
And English majors, don't let the criticism and negativity get you down. Be proud to be an English major because you have skills that not everyone has!
