"Just Give Him A Chance"

Is he really the lesser of two evils?

Many Trump supporters responded to the backlash of the election saying that we as a people needed to stop the widespread opposition of Trump and "give him a chance to be President." This is a fair statement, and, for the most part, Democrats and other opposers of Trump didn't have a choice not to.

It has been almost two weeks of since Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States (although it feels much longer), and I think it's fair to say that we have given him a chance, and he didn't deserve it.

The bullshit started not even 24 hours after the inauguration. We all know that Trump has an ego as big as his conflicts of interest, so when photos surfaced that showed the less-than impressive turnout for his inauguration ceremony, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was sent to address the "issue," saying that “this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe (source).”

I'm not sure how stupid the Trump administration thinks that we are, because the statement is easily and objectively proved wrong. This was then followed by Counselor Kellyanne Conway's statement about "alternative facts," which I guess is the world we're living in now.

But no matter how juvenile and petty this seems, it signals a more dangerous issue. Donald Trump had shown a disrespect for facts all along the campaign trail and throughout his business career, but as President it is much more significant. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are critical parts of our democracy, because they keep our leaders and legislators accountable. The Trump administration's attempt to delegitimize the press is a way for them to manipulate the people's perception of them and their actions.

This happened again when Trump issued a freeze on the EPA and all it's activities, and tweets about scientific facts on climate change were deleted from a National Parks Service twitter account. This censorship is dangerous and indicative of corruption.

Since then, Congress has began to repeal a number of anti-pollution regulations, in order to benefit the oil and coal industries. Members of the Republican Party in Congress are being paid off by oil and coal companies to block environmental policy, putting their and the oil executives' greed and selfishness ahead of the future of our Earth. That should piss you off. I know I'm fuming.

All this has happened, and I haven't even mentioned the "travel ban" yet. Under the guise of protecting America from terrorists, Trump has placed a ban on immigration from seven different Muslim majority countries. There have been zero terrorist attacks from any refugees or immigrants from any of those seven countries.

So while the biggest refugee crisis since World War II is occurring, the President has closed our doors to people in need and people with legal green cards and visas. He could be saving lives, but he's denying freedoms and separating families. This rightly sparked thousands of people to protest, flocking spontaneously to airports to advocate for these people.

And it has only been two weeks. Trump has already caused so much strife and so many problems and there's nothing we can do but stay attentive and stay involved. I wake up every day with a pit in my stomach and more bad news.

We've given him a chance, and he's disappointed and disgraced our country. Now it's time to resist.
