Just Get On The Plane

I never thought I would be able to do it.

Just Get On The Plane

I never thought that my first experience on an airplane would be an eight hour flight out of the United States. I always thought I would get on a plane to go to Florida or something first, never Europe. On top of this being my first flight and first time out of the United States, I went without my family. I was with my friends, and although I still felt alone and terrified, it was an experience I will never forget.

I traveled to the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Austria with a group called "GeoAddicts" from my high school. They travel to a different area of the world every year. Luckily the trip scheduled for my senior year of high school included several days in Poland. I am of Polish descent, so I was excited to be able to take this journey. My trip included several stops at many historical sites such as castles, palaces, churches, museums, and cemeteries in several countries.

I spent three years fundraising and saving money to pay for my trip. It seemed like it would never be time to leave, then before I knew it I was packing my suitcase. My parents drove me to the airport, and the closer we got to the terminal, the more nervous I became. What was I doing? How am I going to do this without my mom? I don't speak any of the languages, other than how to say "please" in Polish? How am I going to communicate?

Once I found my group in the terminal, my nerves started to settle. I can do this! Until I boarded the plane... None of our group was able to sit together. I was alone, on my first flight. An eight hour non-stop to Schipol Airport in Amsterdam. The anxiety started to come back.

I was able to sleep for some of the flight, and once I changed planes in Amsterdam my nerves settled down. I was going to Europe! I am going to have a great time, I am going to enjoy this (possibly) once in a lifetime trip. My tour started as soon as my feet hit the ground in Prague. I was so busy, I didn't have time to be homesick, or scared, or nervous. I enjoyed the food, the sights, the people, everything about the trip was fantastic.

All my fears and anxiety about traveling alone were completely unfounded. I learned a new independence during my trip. I learned how to communicate without knowing the native language. I learned how to read a map to find my way around a new city. I was given a new level of freedom during my trip, and it was a fantastic learning experience. I am so glad I went to Europe, it's an experience I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. If you're thinking about traveling to a foreign country but you're nervous about it, don't be. Just get on the plane, the bus, the boat, whatever, you won't regret it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
