Just Be Yourself

You are told this all the time, but it's so necessary.

Being a part of our society makes it so hard to be ourselves. Regardless of how easy this may seem; it is actually extremely hard for most. For myself almost my entire life has been spent being what everyone else wanted which made me very unhappy. It causes you to lose a lot of self confidence and feel almost like an alien. Not until the past year could I say that I have truly just been myself.

Since we are constantly being told what is acceptable or unacceptable, it seems nearly impossible to just be you. Making the decision to just follow my own path and be my own person regardless of what others thought of me was the absolute best thing I could have ever done for myself. I always found myself basically dressing the part of what a basic high school teenage girl would be and I always felt very out of character and somewhat empty. Feeling like I was missing something, I decided to stop caring so much about what others thought of me. Now of course no one can get rid of that entirely, but releasing some of that constant need for acceptance was pretty freeing. I realize that a lot more things are being accepted, but its still extremely hard to not have that obligation to be like everyone else.

You probably think that by being yourself you would be out-casted or “weird”. Whether you are a carbon copy of everyone else or a unique individual, this may still happen. The idea with that is don’t live your life to please people who really aren’t worth pleasing or that have no actual effect on your life. We have very little time in life so spending it trying to be exactly like everyone else is pretty wasteful if you ask me. Those who step outside of the box and choose to be different and think individually are usually the ones that do amazing things with their lives.

At the end of it all the best favor you could ever do for yourself is to try and be the best you that you can possibly be. Follow all of your dreams and find self acceptance. Cut yourself some slack and don’t be so hard on yourself. Always forgive others and especially yourself. Live life in a way that makes others gaze in awe. Love all of those around you and this also includes yourself. Spread positivity in any way that you can. Rather than everyone tearing each other down it’d be cool to build each other up and encourage each others differences. Embracing yourself is possibly the hardest thing ever, but it isn’t impossible. Just takes a little courage, but it could make for a much better life.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
