If you’ve ever taken an Introduction to Psychology course, you’ve heard of the Stroop Effect. If not, have no fear – the concept is simple. The experimenter tells the subjects to name the color of the word in front of them. When the word is “blue” and the color of the word is blue, the reaction time is quick and easy. When the word is “purple” and the color of the word is red, the reaction time is longer and answers are more prone to errors. The reasons for the delay and mistakes are still studied today – most likely, it is due to the mass of information processed in parallel in the brain.
Jung and Stroop has taken this brain test to the next step. This new company sells shirts inspired by the cognitive psychology put forward by Carl Jung and J. Ridley Stroop (hence the name). Both men and women can find unisex shirts that utilize three separate colors: the fabric color, the name of a color, and the color of the word. All three colors are different so as to confuse and amuse anyone who sees you wearing it.
“Part of me has always appreciated clever graphic T-shirts,” the founder, Liam Wall, a rising sophomore at Johns Hopkins University, told The Odyssey. “I wanted to make something that was fascinating enough to start a conversation, but stylish enough that people would actually look and feel good while wearing it.”
The mission statement of the company is “To make high quality clothing that celebrates the wonder of human brain by forcing you to think and (hopefully) smile.” The shirts are also offered in Spanish and German, for those of you who would like to confuse other people’s brains even more.
The goals are rising for Jung and Stroop;they hope to expand to both men’s and women’s cuts, as well as make more than just T-shirts. But for now, you can get your psychologically stimulating tee shirt at https://jungandstroop.com.
