On Saturday November 19th, Jacksonville State University hosted a football game where some alumni of the band as well as the cheer alumni came and participated. The game was scheduled against UT Martian and it was for the OVC championship. The Marching Southerners are a nationally renowned marching band recognized around the country and it has some of the most passionate alumni. The day started at 9 AM at Burgess-Snow field where the rehearsal took place. More than 1,500 alumni piled into the stands to play southerners classics such as "Stars Fell", "Salvation is Created", and "Quilting Party" along with a few other tunes that the modern day marching southerners play. This years alumni game was dedicated to Dr. David L. Walters, who passed away in late 2015. This was the first year that Dr. Walters was not there for the alumni game and, as you can imagine, it was a very emotional performance for everyone. During halftime, in front of a crowd of almost 20,000 people, the alumni took the field and played their hearts out. I am a Marching Southerner and I can honestly say that out of all of the performances that we have had, this was by far my favorite. JSU takes so much pride in their music department and to see the smiles on the alumni's faces instantly brightened my day. It is an amazing feeling to be in such an amazing organization. Along with the band, the cheerleaders also had some alumni come out and participate. One alumnus even tried taking to the sky in attempt to hold her balance while being held up by her male counter-part. It didn't go very well, but at least she tried! With all of that being said, the alumni game at JSU in 2016 was an amazing event.
