The Best Of J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien is quite possible the greatest author of all time for writing "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, in addition to "The Hobbit." Each book is approximately 300 pages long, which is a pretty big time commitment to read. The movies, though fantastic, are also quite long. "The Hobbit" was split into three movies, bringing us to six movies, with the inclusion of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Adding together the run-time of each movie creates a grand total of 1,032 minutes. And did I mention there's extended versions of each and every movie? Although I am a die-hard fan and have both read the books and seen the movies numerous times, I understand that isn't for everyone. However, no one should be deprived of Tolkien's writing ingenuity, so here is a compilation of some of the best quotes ever composed:

1. "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

2. "Darkness must pass, a new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer." - "The Two Towers"

3. "A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friend and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day." - "The Return of the King"

4. "Not all those who wander are lost." -"The Fellowship of the Ring"

5. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

6. "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

7. "Courage is found in unlikely places." - "The Return of the King"

8. "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - "The Hobbit"

9. "Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

10. "You have been chosen, and you must therefore use such strength and heart and wits as you have." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

11. "The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but there is much that is fair, and though in all the lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

12. "There is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for." - "The Two Towers"

13. "I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil." - "The Return of the King"

14. "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." - "The Two Towers"

15. "The wild world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot forever fence it out." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

16. "It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

17. "May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

18. "Where there's life, there's hope." - "The Hobbit"

19. "In this hour, I do not believe that any darkness will endure." - "The Return of the King"

20. "Home is behind, the world ahead." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

21. "I am looking for someone to share in an adventure." - "The Hobbit"

22. "No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take." - "The Return of the King"

23. "The road goes ever on and on." - "The Hobbit"

24. "I don't know half of you as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

25. "Fool of a Took!" - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
