Journalism is a complex art that really is not all complex. It is important because not everyone is actively looking to find out what is going on in the world.
I decided to major in journalism because I have this exact passion. Lately, I have grown as a person in this major, so this article will explain how.
First off, journalism has changed my perspective on the world. It opened my eyes to so much, I literally get a headache sometimes.
I have learned a lot, heard a lot and have had to balance a lot. The most important lesson I have learned as a journalism major is how to balance a lot of things.
Secondly, being a journalism major has turned me into a political commentator. Many of my articles on this platform have simply been me politically commentating because it seems appealing.
Following this election as a journalism major is a combination of following the actual journalism and following the politics. Due to the actual journalism (which has actually been fantastic for this not-so-pleasant election), becoming a political nerd only felt natural.
It goes back to that balancing act, which is hard to do in this political climate. Now that it is “my way or no way,” balance is more important now than it was years ago.
Next, being a journalism major has taught me to understand things and ask questions. It is okay to ask questions because the burden of proof goes to the one that has to answer.
You should not have to re-phrase a question more than once. Any more times than that and you basically have your answer.
Being a journalism major has also taught me how to explain things. Being in that balancing act and having the best understanding, it becomes easy for me to answer questions.
I can answer those questions in a way that you will understand it. Analogies help a lot, especially in today’s constant question-and-answer climate.
Character wise, being a journalism major has played a huge role in changing my character. From being shy to being bold, I have become way more outspoken.
Writing here on Odyssey has played a huge role in that character shift. I once told my mom that I use my writing as my activism.
I have learned how to speak my mind no matter what, and that is a blessing to me. Living in conservative Arizona, it is nice to know that I can still be able stand in my own thoughts.
My advice for those wanting to be a journalism major is to be prepared for change from the inside out.
Be prepared to be introduced to almost everything under the sun. That is what the major has done to me, and that is what the major will do for you.
