Yes, Journalism Is Still Very Much Alive

Hard to believe people still want to sit down and write stories on what's happening around the world.

Recently, I had someone tell me, "Journalism major, eh? That's still a thing? People still want to study that?"

As a college sophomore currently majoring in journalism, I had to defend myself and all journalism majors out there. Yes, journalism is alive and well. But I understand why people are having mixed feelings about journalists nowadays.

The media has, unfortunately, taken a route that is made millions of people not trust any source. Recently, Denzel Washington said, "We live in a society now where it’s just first. Who cares? Get it out there. We don’t care who it hurts. We don’t care who it destroys. We don’t care if it’s true. Just say it, sell it." The basis of journalism, especially hard news, deals with breaking the news first. It is what our textbooks teach us to be a source that people want to go to daily. Whether or not the news is true depends on the journalist and company's ethics.

However, I want to say that not every aspir

ing journalist wants to live to those standards. When people complain, they complain about the same unethical news sites and don't look at the sites and reporters that work to provide the audience with the most accurate news possible. When people complain about there not being enough coverage, please realize many journalists don't get paid enough to be traveling and sometimes risking their lives to get that news. It's out there. I've seen it. There are journalists in every part of the world covering some of the most dangerous topics, but because they are freelancers, their work is not appreciated by anyone. There are smaller news outlets providing news that isn't focused on the Western World.

Know while I personally don't want to cover hard news, I will always defend journalists because we are not a dying species. It may not pay well, but to many, it is a beautiful career to tell stories and to capture ideas. Please do not mock our career because just like an aspiring Neurosurgeon is working towards a Ph.D., an aspiring political journalist can work towards the same degree.

Writing is a beautiful form of expression and for some people, it is their outlet to express themselves. It is a job for introverts and extroverts. It is a career that will never die, and that is growing each day as people realize what audiences want to read.

Stay beautiful and alive my fellow journalists. We are still one of the most important careers out there. Don't let anyone tell you other wise!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
