Often referred to as the greatest NBA player of all time, Michael Jordan is remembered not just for his play on the court but his extremely competitive nature. Jordan enjoyed nothing more than giving 110% and doing whatever was necessary to come out of a game with a victory, frequently dominating his matchup on the way. Jordan's love for the game of basketball and desire to destroy anyone standing in his path to NBA greatness helped lead him to rewrite NBA history books. Kobe Bryant or the "Black Mamba" as many refer to him, became the heir apparent to Jordan, playing with a competitive fire and dedication to basketball that helped push him to five NBA titles.
With the retirement of Kobe Bryant, who can fans turn to? Who could possibly be the next hypercompetitive NBA superstar? Look no further than Oklahoma City's impassioned talent Russell Westbrook. Don't take it from me, take it from Jordan himself. "Thirty years ago, that's me," said Jordan, "The attitude, trying to prove myself, showing so much passion for the game of basketball. You see it in his play. You can tell he loves the game, he plays with energy and flair."
It doesn't take long to see that passion, energy, and flair in Westbrook's game. One of the most polarizing players in the league, some would call the point guards play style reckless, in a word. No matter what they think of his shot selection, everyone can agree on one thing: Westbrook gives maximum effort when playing and he displays a maniacal drive to win.
There's no questioning Westbrook's versatility, as he carries career averages of 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game. Following Kevin Durant's defection to the Warriors, Westbrook will have to play even more like a young Jordan for the Thunder to stay competitive. Ultimately, Westbrook will have to win some championships to join the elite company of Jordan and Bryant and he will need some star help. Jordan didn't win rings without Pippen and Kobe didn't win rings without Shaq and Pau. It's up to the Thunder to get Westbrook that kind of help going forward.
Durant or no Durant, Westbrook has been gunning to be the top dog his whole career. This year he'll finally get that chance and it should be a joy to watch.
