Before I got to college at Miami University, I had already picked out a few different organizations that I was interested in joining. However, when I got to campus, I felt overwhelmed by all of the opportunities that I was presented with. I was at a school with over 500 different clubs and organizations, and all of them looked so interesting.
Luckily, I stuck to my plan and joined the club that drew my attention the most since before I came to school. I am now a proud member of Miami Dance Corps.
In high school, I participated in multiple different sports that involved dance, such as color guard and synchronized swimming, and I was also in some musicals. However, I never actually did just dance, so I knew this was going to be a very different experience. I was scared, not going to lie. Terrified, actually. I was expecting a room full of perfect ballerinas who wouldn't accept my different experience.
I was wrong.
The cool thing about college, in general, is that everyone there comes from different backgrounds, so when I walked into my practice, I noticed that everyone was on their very own level, and everyone was great in their own way. Also, everyone was so supportive and helpful that my nerves went away super quick. Whenever I wasn't sure of how to do something, I knew someone around me would be more than willing to help me out, and it makes me so glad that I am able to do the same for others as well.
I highly recommend joining at least one group in college, whether it be an academic club, an intramural sport, Greek life or anything in between. Being in organizations has helped me meet new people, especially upperclassmen who are on the same path that I plan to take. I have gotten some of the best pieces of advice from these people, especially which classes not to take and which professors are the best.
These groups have also helped make college feel more like a home away from home. Group socials, fundraisers and weekly practices have given more meaning to my schedule and have definitely given me something to do. It's nice to have stuff like that to look forward to, and most weeks it's a great chance to relieve some stress and tension.
I am also thankful for some of the friends I have made in the groups that I am a part of. I know that no matter how busy my schedule gets outside of practice, I will always have those days to look forward to. Getting to socialize with the friends I have made while doing something that I love has meant the world to me this past semester.
So, to the high school seniors who are about to head off to college, or even to the college underclassmen looking for something new to add to their schedule, join a club or organization. I know it sounds like the typical college advisor statement, but I promise being a part of a group on campus will enrich your overall experience and it will certainly add to your resume. Most groups will also provide you with leadership opportunities if you choose to take them, so that definitely helps as well. It's just such a great way to meet new people and do something that makes you happy every week.
I am so happy I took the "leap" and decided to join Miami Dance Corps. I am thankful to each and every other dancer in the group, and I am proud to be surrounded by so many talented girls each week. Here's to all of the laughter, throwback tunes and good food!
