Join The Odyssey Today!
Katey Schultz

As you all know, I am currently a writer for UC Merced's The Odyssey. So, I decided to write about why all of you fellow bobcats should join!

#1 Strengthen Writing Skills

Writing for The Odyssey is a way for you to strengthen your writing skills and broaden your vocabulary! I joined The Odyssey because I love to write! I’ve always enjoyed writing and it is one of my favorite subjects. Since becoming a writer, I have seen a significant change in my writing style, and a vast of new words added to my vocabulary. It definitely never hurts to brush up on your skills, so don’t hesitate to join our group! You definitely don’t have to be an expert in writing and grammar, since there is always room for improvement.

#2 Way To Express Voice/Opinion!

Being a part of The Odyssey means that YOU are in charge of what you write! You have total charge in what you want your article to be about, so the possibilities are endless! Topics can vary, from the UC Merced 2020 Plan to what your favorite clothing brands may be! Also, with all the things happening out in the world, there’s always something to write about! Though there may be times where you may be at a loss for what to write, the inspiration for your next article usually comes to you at the most random times! Some weeks, I have so many topics that I want to write about that I sometimes have trouble deciding! Regardless of what you write about, it’s exciting to know that other writers and UCM bobcats are reading your materials and that your voice is being heard!

#3 Make Money!

Who doesn’t love making money? As a college student, I definitely know the struggle of debating whether to go out or not due to not wanting to spend money. Well, if you become an Odyssey writer, you have the chance to make money! If your article is the most shared in a week, then you win $20! Making extra money for doing something as simple as speaking your mind is a no-brainer! So, don’t hesitate to apply to join our staff team and possibly make some cash!

#4 Looks Good on Résumé!

Building up your résumé never hurts, so why not join The Odyssey today and have one more thing to add to your list of achievements and involvements? For writing majors especially, it will definitely look good to potential employers that you were an active member of your school’s Odyssey Online, since it shows your commitment to the subject! Even though I am a human Biology major, it’s still something to add to me résumé since it’s not too common and is sure to generate a lot of interesting questions! So, don’t be afraid to apply and possibly boost your chances of getting that dream job!

Well, I hope you all enjoyed this compelling list of why you should apply to be a writer for The Odyssey! Not only is it fun and exciting, but you can also add to your résumé, and possibly make money if your article is the most shared! Again, please don’t hesitate to message me or shoot me an email at jarroyo24@ucmerced.edu if you have are interested in applying or have any general questions/comments!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
