When you think of a strong, powerful, loyal and wise animal, what do you think of? I'm sure many of you pictured an elephant. Around the world, elephants symbolize these characteristics along with good luck and benevolence. These magnificent animals are one of the many species that are being selfishly killed for economic gain. More elephants are killed by poachers than are born each year. This species already faces hardships between climate change and habitat loss, so the senseless killing for ivory is just salt in the wound.
The ivory trade is an illegal commercial network that involves the killing of elephants for their tusks to be sold and made into decorative items. Poachers kill these animals solely to obtain their tusks for a profit. Elephants are an endangered species, and not enough is being done to protect them. There is a new movement to end elephant poaching and put a stop to the ivory trade; this movement is called "Join the Herd." People all over the world are joining together to make this the year of the elephant.
Why should we save elephants? Elephants are extremely intelligent animals. They form family bonds, and herds can consist of just a few elephants to hundreds of elephants. An entire matriarchal herd will raise a newborn calf together. Killing a single elephant can affect an entire herd. The myth of an elephant's memory is true. Their impressive memories help guide the herds to watering holes during droughts. Elephants are capable of feeling grief, pain and joy, and they are even capable of playing together. Elephants communicate with one another over great distances. If these facts don't make you feel empathetic towards these animals, I don't know what will.
There are many different ways you can join and aid in the fight to save elephants and end the ivory trade. Joining the herd is one simple step you can take to help spread awareness. You can also donate to many wildlife protection organizations. Be careful to avoid buying illegal ivory on the internet or any time you travel. We have the power to change what is happening to these incredible animals.
