As a freshman in college, if you had told me my senior year I would be the president of the Campus Activity Board (CAB), I would have laughed in your face. Me be the president of the organization that plans almost all events on campus? Yeah right. If I was going to be president of something it would be a much smaller club that had one event a year.
At the time I was a pre-vet major and I was set on joining clubs that would help me become a vet. I only joined CAB because my oreintation leader was the president and she made it seem fun. I figured I'd make some friends, goof off, and play with glitter. I wasn't planning on a leadership role or remotely anything with responsibility.
If I had stuck to my plan of only joining clubs that I thought useful to my future career, I wouldn't have the portfolio I have today, which includes planning multiple events, advertising those events, networking with performers and agencies, and bringing one of my favorite bands to campus. Now I want to plan events for a living and I'm not at all intimidated by the idea of calling a performer and negotating thier price so I can afford them on a tight budget.
I'm not saying you have to join the Campus Actvitiy Board (though as president, I urge you to please do so). I'm saying two things. One, join a club. I know you're busy with classes. I know it feels like the world is crashing in around you after only a week. I know college is stressful. Join a club. At least one. Use it as a weekly stress reliever. Remember that college is more than just what you learn in the classroom. What you do outside of class is just as important. Two, join a club that doesn't fit with your major. Do something random. Join the crafting club even though you're a bio major. Choose something that is going to help round you out. You never know, you might just fall in love.
