UKY Ad Club

Ad Club, UK’s American Advertising Federation chapter, serves to provide opportunities for professional development. Ad Club is open to all students regardless of major or class rank. There are opportunities to attend student conferences and networking events, such as the AAF National Student Insight/Interaction event, a two-day conference where students can learn about the field of advertising, discover what trends are developing in the industry, and get a jump-start on their career by networking with knowledgeable advertising professionals and recruiters.

What is Ad Club?

Ad Club is a professional club focusing on networking and immersing oneself into the advertising industry. This year, we are revamping the club. Our goal is to host events that are comprised of guest speakers in the industry, as well as hands-on classes to learn new and valuable skills. The organization will also help you to build your resume.

About AAF

The American Advertising Federation (AAF), the nation’s oldest national advertising trade association, and the only association representing all facets of the advertising industry, is headquartered in Washington, DC, and acts as the “Unifying Voice for Advertising.” The AAF’s membership is comprised of nearly 100 corporate members, comprising the nation’s leading advertisers, advertising agencies, and media companies; a national network of nearly 200 professional level clubs representing 40,000 advertising professionals; and more than 200 AAF college chapters with more than 5,000 student members.

Ad Club Mission

Serve students interested in the world of advertising by establishing a diverse network of professionals within the industry and offering opportunities to transfer skills from the classroom to the professional world. We will also strive to help each student develop a better understanding of the industry. These goals will be accomplished by utilizing the vast resources that are available.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
