They're definitely doing something right

Five Companies You Need to Know About

The fastest and more common way of promoting a company is through social media. With that being said, I've come across more than a fair share of companies that are up-and-coming that are trying to do good for its community, or for a program overseas. What I mean by this is that each product purchased by this company will either donate a few dollars off of that product and send it to the charity/ program that their company promotes and supports, or they'll send that same exact product to someone who is in need of it.

1) The Elephant Pants

This company works with women in Thailand to create beautiful and comfortable harem stretchy pants. Those workers get health care, a well deserved salary, and a safe working environment. The company sells not only pants, but shorts, leggings, shirts, bags, and more. The company itself donates a few dollars from each product to the African Wildlife Foundation to help save the elephants, keep the rangers safe and healthy, and to help protect the wildlife itself.

2) Love Your Melon

This company is well known for being run by college kids across the country that produce beanies and hats to raise money for children fighting cancer. Their program was once a buy one/ give one, which meant for every item you purchased, you are also giving a child fighting for their life an item. These college kids across the country hand deliver these products in superhero costumes...How amazing is that? And if you know a child that doesn't have a hat yet, you can request a hat to be delivered to the child. They stated in their mission page that they've partnered up with the PinkySwear Foundation, and have since then replaced their buy one, give one program with giving "50% of all net proceeds on Love Your Melon product sold will be donated to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch" to raise fund research and procedures. The company sells two different types of beanies, caps, shirts, and accessories. These products have quickly become a trend not only within the college community, but they've made their way into celebrities rooms like Kelsea Ballerini, Megan and Liz, The Swon Brothers, Tyler Farr, and more!

3) TOMS

TOMS is a shoe company that donates a pair of shoes when you purchase a pair. Since their release a few years back, they've donated more than 50 million pairs of shoes to children that need them. They've also given back in the gifts of sight, water, safe births, and kindness. TOMS has their own eyewear line, and coffee roast, so with every pair of TOMS eyewear purchased they give a full eye exam by professionals to help restore vision and help find eyewear for that person. With their Coffee product, they give "140 liters of safe water, a week's supply, to a person in need" (TOMS.com/what-we-give-water). This company overall does its best to help those in need in any way shape or form and is truly an inspiring company. They also sell apparel and accessories, and everything is super reasonable with their prices, so I really don't see why someone wouldn't purchase something from this company. 4) People Water

People Water is a for- profit organization, who works with a drop-for-drop system. "For every bottle purchased People Water will give an equal amount of clean water to a person in need" (http://www.peoplewater.com/drop-for-drop). The way they give back with clean water is "either by drilling a new well, repairing an existing well, or establishing a water purification system." This company wants to end the sickness spread by drinking unsafe water, and end the long walks to get a small amount of clean water. The water bottles come in various amounts, such as a 12 pack, 24 pack and a 6 pack. The company also sells reusable bottles, apparel, and accessories which all help the company produce more water based products to give to those in need. Their website states that they have given over 8.7 million gallons of water, and the number grows every day. This company is affiliated with villages in Haiti, Ghana, India and Nicaragua.

5) One Laptop Per Child

One Laptop Per Child is an organization that puts its donations towards providing low cost/ low powered laptop to a child in need. This company believes that there is nothing more important than educating children that don't get a real chance. These computers have many educational programs and actives, so they're using these computers to move further in their lives, rather than using it for pleasure (social media). This company also created a tablet that also utilizes the same functions as the laptop. Now, it doesn't list the price of each product, but it has a donation page, so I'm assuming this company just gathers up the money they collect and works with what they receive. Either way, it's a great company that is reaching out to help those who deserve a chance to better their lives. (http://one.laptop.org/about/mission)

The stories behind these companies are inspiring and are only trying to help those around the world who may not have an equal opportunity for these products. Each product is reasonably priced, and goes to a great cause, so I'd encourage anyone reading to take a little extra money out of their pockets and put it towards one of these amazing causes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
